SOLITARY CONFINEMENT IS TORTURE AND VIOLATES THE EIGHTH AMENDMENT, yet it is still common practice in prisons all over the US. We even instill it on youth offenders, for whom isolation can cause permanent brain damage in just a matter of days. Days, weeks, and years in the hold lead to anxiety, depression, hallucinations, and self-harm. This is what prisons turn to when they feel the need to further punish someone incarcerated.
